Clean Home For The Holidays

As the holidays approach closer it is time to prepare the house for the guests. But there is one thing that we need to do before setting up the Christmas decoration – cleaning. So here is my 4 step quick guide on how to clean your home for the Holidays, there are many more things that you can do if you don’t want to hire a professional cleaning service, but here I’ve listed just the most important ones.

Think About Cleaning Your Upholstery

The family would gather and usually there would be younglings too. As we know toddlers never fail to create a mess, so you may be asking yourself “how can I preserve my sofa so the little devils don’t ruin it?”. Putting a polyethylene would not exactly create a welcoming home atmosphere but you could put throws which you can easily wash later. You can also spray with Scotchgard for upholstery, it will create a barrier so liquid and food spills wont be able to penetrate the surface layer so easily, don’t forget that you would need at least 12 hours to dry up so don’t do it in the last possible moment.

Dust & Polish The Furniture

I stopped using rags and paper towels for this task long ago, there is much better alternative called microfibre cloth. It absorbs up to 7 times its weight in dirt and liquid and it could be washed more than 300 times before it starts to fall apart. Just wet the cloth and wipe furniture surface thoroughly. Just remember to wipe vertical surfaces from top to bottom. One look at places that you don’t dust that often such as lamps, doors, windows and painting frames. Dust contains allergens and you want to reduce it to minimum levels

Schedule Carpet Cleaning

Professional carpet cleaners are not needed too often, once a year should be enough. If it happens so that you don’t remember calling them this year, now will be the perfect time to do it. Hot water extraction and steam carpet cleaning methods are the most popular because they no only deep clean the carpet but also eradicate all pests and microorganisms. This would also help to minimize the allergen levels in your home and will improve the air quality. Even if the surface of your rugs and carpets look fine microscopic particles are slowly stuffed in the deeper layers. When you step on them, you rip and tear the fibers without even realizing it, the wearing out is still slow but if you don’t deep clean your carpet as recommended, this would significantly reduce the lifespan of your favorite furnishings.

Cleaning the Windows and Curtins

If your windows look dirty now is a good time to clean them, you will spend most of the holidays inside your home but you want a clear view outside. There are various cleaning methods to do this but recently I’ve been a fan of this ingenious window cleaning tool, it is cordless and it would allow you to clean the windows much faster than any other way. It costs around 50 pounds but it is really worth the money as it provides amazing results and it also works well on tiles and mirrors. If you are going to clean the windows you can go one step further and wash the curtains. Often people put decorate the curtains so washing them before that would be nice. Just be careful when removing them from the rods and try not to loose any hooks maybe keep them in a little box until you put the curtains back. If the curtains radiate foul smell you can add a cup of white vinegar to the hot water, vinegar is natural deodorizer and would not just mask the odor but remove it.
